Reservatol has been in the news a great deal over the last few years as various studies have been made into the properties that it is reputed to have.
What is Resveritrol? Resveritrol is the ingredient in red wine that made headlines when scientists demonstrated that it kept overfed mice from gaining weight and seemed to slow down their aging process. Since anti-aging is a hot topic , few medical discoveries have generated so much instant interest.
Reservatol may slow aging and here is how it works. Reservatol is a molecule which is produced by several plants and found in the skin of red grapes in minute amounts and thus is present in red wine - the health benefits of red wine!
When the resveratrol molecule enters the cell, it activates an enzyme called SIRT1 As a consequence SIRT1 engenders new mitochondria in the muscle and other tissue. As a result, the new mitochondria boost the metabolic rate of the body which is thought may mimic the slow-aging effects of a lower calorie diet. Possible benefits are thought to include:-
- Less weight gain
- Prevention of diabetes
- Prevention of cancer
- Increase exercise endurance
- Prevent strokes and heart disease
- Prevents Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases
The prevention of diabetes is an especially exciting possibility. As it is thought that reservatol, an antioxidant found in red wine, may counter type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, according to one study. The resveratrol side effects
are thought to be minimal at the most.

Insulin is a hormone that controls the blood sugar in our body. However our bodies can become becomes less sensitive to insulin which is known as insulin resistance. This condition can lead to type 2 diabetes. Chinese scientists have reported that reservatol curbs insulin resistance in mice. and indicate that this is could be a valuable new strategy in the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. If these findings also apply to people, then it might be possible to create new resveratrol compounds.
According to the American Diabetes Association. there are over twenty million children and adults in the United States, or approximately 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While it is thought that an estimated fifteen million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, this leaves about five million people who are unaware that they have the disease.
About 54 million people are estimated to be pre-diabetic – that is they are leading a lifestyle that will probably lead to diabetes.
If resveratrol can help prevent diabetes, together with all its other benefits it must surely be a resveratrol supplement worth taking.

It seems mandatory that the word resveratol must be accompanied by hype and pseudo science in any article - particularly when seen in any of the ‘wine press’. From Chemistry and Industry Magazine is yet anothe
