Are There Any Resveratrol Side Effects?
To date, there no one has reported any negative Resveratrol side effects.
There was some concern that it might stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells, because the chemical structure is similar to that of a plant estrogen. But, later research showed that the antioxidant actually fights breast cancer.
As a phytoalexin, the compound may have mild anti-bacterial activity, which at high dosages could disrupt the natural bacterial flora that lives in our digestive systems. At low or moderate dosages, this should not be a problem, but eat your active yogurt, anyway.
There is a problem with bio-availability for this nutrient. Researchers have found that drinking a glass of red wine on an empty stomach does not significantly raise the trans-Resveratrol content in the bloodstream.
Combining the wine with food shows greater increase, which indicates that stomach acid, is a factor. The best choice for supplementation then is a tablet with an enteric coating. This is the case of many specialty supplements. The coating allows the nutrient to pass through the stomach and into the upper intestine, where it will pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream.
Since there are no known Resveratrol side effects, the next step would be to compare the supplements on the market in terms of value. There have been some positive reviews on the internet for a 200mg product, but try as I might; I can't get enough information to determine whether or not the manufacture includes an enteric coating.
If there is an enteric coating on the tablet, that is too much Resveratrol. If there is not, it could cause stomach upset and digestive problems. At a price of $19 for 60 capsules, it seems like a good value, but then you have to look at what other supplements these reviewers bought at the same time.
They reported no negative Resveratrol side effects, said that it provided good results, but they didn't say what those results were. I was able to find out that the reviewers also bough coenzyme Q10, 100gel caps for $10.49, turmeric, 100 caps for $3.99 and quercetin, 200 capsules for $18.14.
When combined with the Resveratrol, that's over $50 for only four active ingredients.
That's the problem with single ingredient supplements.
All of those nutrients and plant extracts are good for your health, but who wants to take a handful of pills every day, especially when single ingredient supplements do not provide essential vitamins and minerals.
So, they cannot prevent nutritional deficiencies.
I take a supplement that provides 20mg or trans-Resveratrol, with an enteric coating, and I have never experienced any negative Resveratrol side effects.
The supplement that I take contains essential vitamins and minerals, as well as selected amino acids, cofactors and enzymes.
It contains CoQ10, turmeric and over 70 other bio-active ingredients.
The cost is $48.25 for 120 tablets. In my opinion, that's a better value.
You might think that more is better, but there could be Resveratrol side effects that we are unaware of. Stick with the low dose and be safe.
