Red wine is a rich source of resveratrol, and contains significantly more resveratrol than white wine. This is because the grape skins are left in with the juice for longer when making red wine, and the skins are where most of the resveratrol is found.

resveratrol content varies considerably from one red wine to another, however. So, what are the best red wines for resveratrol content?

By far the highest resveratrol content (around 40mg/liter) is found in both red and white wines made from the thick-skinned Muscadine grape, which is native to Florida and other parts of the south-eastern United States. Muscadine wine is not widely available ofoods with resveratrolutside the US, however.

Other red wines typically contain between 2 and 12.5mg of resveratrol per liter. Of the more popular grape varieties, Pinot Noir produces wines with the highest average resveratrol levels. The Pinot Noir grape tends to thrive in temperate, damp climates which also encourage molds and yeasts that attack vines and other plants.

In this humid environment, plants produce increased quantities of resveratrol to defend against oxidization damage from fungal growth and other external pressures. Scientists have discovered that resveratrol has similar antioxidant benefits for the human body.

Pinot Noir from its native Burgundy, France, as well as from Oregon, Washington State or New Zealand generally contains more resveratrol than the equivalent wine from a hotter, dryer area such as California or Australia. Levels will also vary significantly from one vintage to another depending on the temperature and rainfall during the growing period.

You don't need to restrict yourself to drinking Pinot Noir, though - other red wines from cool, damp regions of the world are just as likely to offer good levels of resveratrol. The key to picking a red wine that gives you a decent amount of resveratrol is therefore to know a bit of geography.

Grape seed extract is a liquid or powdery substance that is derived from the small seeds of red grapes. Occasionally, grape seed extract may come from the skins of red grapes. Grape seed extract is a rich source of flavonoids, which are phytochemicals that contain antioxidant properties.

Many people believe that these flavonoids are just as vital as vitamin C and vitamin E to maintaining health.

A supplement rich in cancer-fighting properties

Antioxidants are substances that help the body to remove free radicals, which are cancer causing agents. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that can contribute to the development of numerous harmful conditions in the body. This is the reason grape seed extract supplements that are rich in antioxidants have become popular.

The most valued of flavonoids found in grape seed extract are procyanidolic oligomers or proanthocyanidins (PCOs). Aside from their powerful antioxidant properties, PCOs are also reported to improve blood circulation. The PCOs from grape seed extract are believed to strengthen blood vessels, resulting in improved heart function and a reduction in cancer cells. grape seed oil health benefits

Grape Seed Oil Health Benefits

European doctors often prescribe drugs containing PCOs for vascular disorders. Aside from grape seed extract, PCOs are also found in maritime pine. PCOs drawn from maritime pines have the same health benefits and therapeutic benefits as PCOs drawn from grape seed extract. However, maritime pines are more expensive and have a more limited supply than grape seeds.

There are many grape seed oil health benefits. Taking grape seed extract can help improve blood circulation, which help prevent leg cramps, diabetes complications, varicose veins, numbness in the extremities, muscular degeneration, cataracts and impotence. Because most of these health conditions more commonly occur and are severe among the elderly, grape seed extract can be especially beneficial to them.

Grape seed extract is also believed to partially block the release of prostaglandin, the substance responsible for causing pain and inflammation in disorders such as endometriosis.muscadine grape seed

Grape seed extract is commonly used as an ingredient in European facial creams. When used as a topical ointment, grape seed extract is believed to help maintain the skin’s elasticity.

The antioxidants in grape seed extract help protect muscle cells attacked by free radicals. As a result, those who wish to reduce the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia often take grape seed extract. Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia is not yet known, its painful symptoms include chronic muscle pain and stiffness.

Countless studies have shown that antioxidants play some part in reducing the number of cancer cells in the body. Because of this, people who are at risk for cancer often use grape seed extract. It is believed that the antioxidants in grape seed extract neutralize cell mutations that lead to tumor formation. It is hoped that by taking grape seed extract, the progression of common cancers such as lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and skin cancer can be halted.

Buying grape seed extract

Grape seed extract supplements are available in many forms and they are generally inexpensive. These supplements can be purchased in tablet, liquid or capsule form. The standardized formula for the grape seed extract should be labeled as 92% or 95% PCO. Grape seed extract side effects.

Most resveratrol supplement are not worth the investment. While researchers have shown many resveratrol benefits in the laboratory, the nutrient must reach your bloodstream in order to perform its magic.

The latest research indicates that it does not usually make it to the bloodstream. They have tested people's blood after drinking wine on an empty stomach, drinking it with food and taking uncoated resveratrol supplements. None of these caused a significant increase in the levels of trans-resveratrol in the bloodstream.

All of the studies concerning resveratrol benefits were conducted using trans-resveratrol. The supplement with the highest trans-resveratrol content is standardized to a 50% concentration. If an enteric coating is applied, this type of supplement can increase the blood level of trans-resveratrol, but most companies don't use the right form and they don't include an enteric coating.

You won't get any resveratrol benefits from a powder or liquid form. You might get some by drinking red wine, but researchers believe that the benefit of red wine is not due to its trans-resveratrol content. The amount that you would have to drink to significantly affect circulating blood levels would be damaging to the liver. resveratrol capsules

So, resveratrol supplement are a good idea, as long as the manufacturer uses the right form, combines it with other important nutrients and wraps the whole thing up in an enteric coating, to insure that it reaches the upper intestine, where it can pass through to the bloodstream.

Some of the resveratrol benefits include a healthier heart, a reduced risk of cancer, better functioning metabolism and possibly an extension of your lifespan, if the results of the laboratory studies can be transferred to humans.

No one is sure how or why it works in the ways that it does. There are only theories.

One of the most convincing is that trans-resveratrol increases the activity of a gene that can reduce a free radical known as superoxide. Superoxide molecules are not highly toxic, but they can, over time, cause DNA degeneration.

If this theory is correct, resveratrol supplement should include vitamin C, enzymes and glutathione. The gene reduces superoxide to hydrogen peroxide, which is also a free radical. Vitamin C and other ascorbates, reduce hydrogen peroxide to water. If glutathione and enzymes are also present, vitamin C remains more active for a longer period of time. Resveratrol is also available as resveratrol capsules or cream resveratrol.

Some of the better supplement manufacturers include the right combination of antioxidants and other nutrients to provide the greatest effect. Resveratrol benefits are included among them.

There are hundreds of different nutrients and plant extracts that are known to be beneficial to human health. It would be nearly impossible to include all of them in your diet. Some of them are not plants that we normally eat. Extracts from marigold, for example, are known to protect the eyes from oxidative damage. When was the last time that you ate a marigold? resveratrol supplement

So, supplementation is important and necessary, if you want to live the longest, healthiest life possible. But, single-ingredient resveratrol supplement are not your best choice for supplementation.

Valerie Rosenbaum has spent the last few years researching anti aging natural supplements and skincare products that use only natural ingredients.

The two criteria she applied in her research was that:
1) the products had to use all natural ingredients in the least processed state possible and
2) the products must have undergone clinical trials to prove their effectiveness.

As a result of these efforts, Rosenbaum has found what she believes to be the most effective natural anti-aging supplements available on the market today.

The recommended reservatrol  dosage is a level that has been made up mainly by the manufacturers who make the supplements and if you look around you will see that they vary quite considerably.

Resveratrol that is found in plants is normally only found in trace amounts but that also varies according to the individual plant concerned. The wonderful thing about plants is that even though they can be exactly the same if they are grown in different conditions due to weather changes or soil changes then the secondary metabolites will vary with each individual plant.

However saying that we know that certain plants are richer in the polyphenol, resveratrol than others, Japanese knotweed is a rich source and has allowed the Japanese people the benefit of its many healing and preventative properties for hundreds of years.

Because research is relatively new in this field; it's been around for around 20 years, scientists are only just beginning to get a glimpse at the wonderful things that it can do to keep us healthy. Some of the experiments that have been run during this time have been on human cancer tissue and because it has shown to be so successful scientists have been interested in arriving at a dose that would have the optimum effect on killing the malignant cells.

This would be very different from a normal day to day recommended resveratrol dosage of between 20mg - 50mg, depending on your age. Another point to make is that at this dosage 50% of it needs to be made up of trans-Resveratrol as this is the most active form that is the easiest and most effective for the human body.

Resveratrol at the above dosage, that I have mentioned, has anti viral properties which is great for keeping viral illnesses at bay. I have been taking the recommended resveratrol  dosage for quite a few months now and I have noticed some wonderful changes to my mind, body and energy levels. They have all improved. This allows me to cram more into my day.

But to ensure that I am getting the absolute optimum benefit from resveratrol I take it as part of a combined nutrient supplement containing lots of other wonderful extracts such as decaffeinated green tea, ginko biloba and many others.

So what is the best resveratrol and should you take mega resveratrol or resveratrol plus?

In fact there are over 70 life enhancing nutrients that makes a great synergistic blend that is impossible to beat. Furthermore because they are coated in a special enteric coating it does not break down in the stomach and preserves all those nutrients are until they are safely carried to the villi in the small intestines where they are released and absorbed into the blood stream to be taken to the parts of the body that needs them.

To date, there no one has reported any negative Resveratrol side effects.
There was some concern that it might stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells, because the chemical structure is similar to that of a plant estrogen. But, later research showed that the antioxidant actually fights breast cancer.

As a phytoalexin, the compound may have mild anti-bacterial activity, which at high dosages could disrupt the natural bacterial flora that lives in our digestive systems. At low or moderate dosages, this should not be a problem, but eat your active yogurt, anyway.

There is a problem with bio-availability for this nutrient. Researchers have found that drinking a glass of red wine on an empty stomach does not significantly raise the trans-Resveratrol content in the bloodstream.resveratrol side effects, buy resveratrol

Combining the wine with food shows greater increase, which indicates that stomach acid, is a factor. The best choice for supplementation then is a tablet with an enteric coating. This is the case of many specialty supplements. The coating allows the nutrient to pass through the stomach and into the upper intestine, where it will pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream.

Since there are no known Resveratrol side effects, the next step would be to compare the supplements on the market in terms of value. There have been some positive reviews on the internet for a 200mg product, but try as I might; I can't get enough information to determine whether or not the manufacture includes an enteric coating.

If there is an enteric coating on the tablet, that is too much Resveratrol. If there is not, it could cause stomach upset and digestive problems. At a price of $19 for 60 capsules, it seems like a good value, but then you have to look at what other supplements these reviewers bought at the same time.

They reported no negative Resveratrol side effects, said that it provided good results, but they didn't say what those results were. I was able to find out that the reviewers also bough coenzyme Q10, 100gel caps for $10.49, turmeric, 100 caps for $3.99 and quercetin, 200 capsules for $18.14.

When combined with the Resveratrol, that's over $50 for only four active ingredients.

That's the problem with single ingredient supplements.

All of those nutrients and plant extracts are good for your health, but who wants to take a handful of pills every day, especially when single ingredient supplements do not provide essential vitamins and minerals.

So, they cannot prevent nutritional deficiencies.resveratrol side effects, buy resveratrol

I take a supplement that provides 20mg or trans-Resveratrol, with an enteric coating, and I have never experienced any negative Resveratrol side effects.

The supplement that I take contains essential vitamins and minerals, as well as selected amino acids, cofactors and enzymes.

It contains CoQ10, turmeric and over 70 other bio-active ingredients.

The cost is $48.25 for 120 tablets. In my opinion, that's a better value.

You might think that more is better, but there could be Resveratrol side effects that we are unaware of. Stick with the low dose and be safe.

There has been a lot of resveratrol research over the years. Some researchers set out to prove the benefits. Others set out to disprove them. It seems that whatever they set out to do, they accomplish.

The results of any scientific experiment are subject to debate. Those involving cell cultures and lines in laboratory settings are often a particular point of controversy. But, as one of many people who hope to avoid life-threatening and chronic diseases, I applaud the efforts of these scientists, particularly when it comes to cancer prevention.

If we can learn what it takes to prevent cancer, rather than treat it, then we'll be a lot better off. Treatments are important, of course, but most treatments can only be expected to extend a person's life for five or ten more years.

The available treatments are accompanied by debilitating side effects that often make it difficult or impossible for a person to work or take care of their homes, sometimes, for extended periods of time.resveratrol cancers, cancer research with resveratrol

But, if we can learn how to prevent cancer, then we won't have to worry about treatments. That is the goal of most resveratrol research: cancer prevention.

Scientists started out looking at the benefits for heart disease prevention. The results indicate that a sufficient dosage on a daily basis can help prevent cardiovascular disease.

Because of the compounds antioxidant activity, scientists began to look at its cancer-preventive affects. As you may know, antioxidants prevent free radical damage, one of the root causes of cancer.

Scientists also found that the antioxidant has anti-inflammatory activity. Another of the root causes of cancer, as well as heart and vascular disease, is chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is involved in many age-related diseases, including arthritis.

The resveratrol research has shown that the supplement protects against arthritis in animal models. Hopefully, it will have the same benefit in humans as well. But, the latest studies are being conducted by a pharmaceutical company. They are looking for a new drug for type II diabetes.

There are a number of natural extracts, most of them from plants, that help prevent and reverse type II diabetes, but pharmaceutical companies usually aren't interested in them. They can make a synthetic form of resveratrol and that's likely the reason that they are looking at it.resveratrol cancers, cancer research with resveratrol

Synthetics are easier to produce and cost less than naturally occurring compounds. They can also be patented, which allows the drug companies to charge more for them.

Hopefully, the resveratrol research will continue. One group intends to publish a paper later on this year concerning the sum of the total studies that have been conducted to date. That type of a meta-analysis may give everyone a clearer picture, since it will include results form both positive and negative trials.

If you are looking for a good supplement, I would recommend a multi-ingredient one that combines the benefits of resveratrol, with other unique antioxidants. According to some of the resveratrol research, it may even extend our lifespan. Wouldn't that be something?

Interest in wine's health benefits in the last two decades may have been sparked by a desire to establish a reason for the so called 'French Paradox'.

There is a where a lower incidence of heart disease is found in the French. The French have a diet rich in fat and it is rational to think this antagonistic diet would be incompatible with good health. The French are known to eat more beef, cheese and butter than their European neighbors. Several researchers concluded that along with their rich fatty foods they also have a significant intake of red wine when compared to other Europeans and even Westerners. Thus the door was open for many researchers to study the health effects of wine (especially red wine) as a possible solution to this quandary.

There is research supported information that moderate red wine consumption (that is one glass for women and one to two for men) can protect you against heart disease, hypertension and cancer. It also has been shown to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. Of course moderation is key here. This is certainly not an example of where a little is good a whole lot is better. Therefore, the medical community is very cautious to recommend routine use of red wine for obvious reasons.resveratrol grape juice

Some studies in women regarding the consumption of alcohol and risk of breast cancer found an increase of this type of cancer in women who consume at least one drink daily. According to a report by the American Cancer Society in 2004 there was an increase of 30% in the death rate from breast cancer in women who would drink alcohol daily.

This confounding information aside consumption of one or two drinks per day is associated with a reduction in risk of approximately 30 to 50 percent in coronary heart disease. Heart disease being the overwhelming number one killer of woman annually makes it the major target. So wine consumption has an overall positive effect on death rates in the female population.

The compounds responsible for the protective powers of wine are a class of compounds called antioxidants. Red wines contain several antioxidants the key isolate being the polyphenol compound called trans-Resveratrol or Res for short. Res is found in other fruit besides grapes including mulberries, raspberries and muscadine grapes (indigenous to the Americas). And in this particular grape Res is reported to be seven times as concentrated. Resveratrol is also encountered in peanuts and other nuts. Researchers at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Illinois found that Res has both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

A paper published by the UNC researchers in 2000 in the journal Cancer Research reports that Res inhibits the activity of a protein called NF-kappa B which attaches to DNA inside human cells. This protein acts like a switch turning certain genes on and off. Cancer cells propagate and continue to survive by means of NF-kappa B and thus under controlled settings researcher introduce Res which turns off this protein and thus causes the death (apoptosis) of cancer cells.

In 1992 Harvard Medical School researchers included moderate alcohol consumption as one of eight ways to reduce coronary heart disease risk. The cardioprotective effect is attributed to the antioxidants found in wine grape skins and seeds. These antioxidants (flavonoids) are found in higher concentration in red as opposed to white wine. As part of the red wine making process grape skins, stems and seeds are kept in contact with the juice for a long period of time imparting not only the 'red' color but also these health-benefiting flavonoids. It should also be noted that certain flavonoids found in oak wood are conveyed, as many red wine spends much time 'aging' in oak barrels.

Coronary heart disease reduction by Res and other antioxidant flavonoids occur in part due to a reduction in the production of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and the increase of the good high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Additionally these agents reduce blood-clotting factors limiting thrombus from causing 'clots' in the coronary arteries. Some of these properties may be attributed to the fact that Res has mild estrogenic properties and estrogens as a class of hormones seem to be cardioprotective.

Still another study indicated that Resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells. There are those experts that believe this may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's in the near future. There is even one study out there claiming that daily moderate wine consumption will result in weight loss.

Not all wines are created equally. Studies from the University of California at Davis conducted studies on several varietals. They determined that higher concentrations of flavonoids are present in Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes. Merlot and Red Zinfandels have far fewer flavonoids. Whites once again came out short, as the bigger bolder more tannic wines seemed best for high flavonoid yields.health benefits of red wine

Resveratrol has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries in the form of a plant called Polygonum cuspidatum for the treatment of liver and heart conditions. Why take a bitter herb when you can sip a fine wine?

According to recent statistics, year 2002 wine volume in the United States was approximately 595 million gallons. Up 34 million gallons of annual wine production when compared to 2001 records and the trend continues. California remains the largest wine producing state in the US with 90 percent coming from this state alone.

With wine sales in the United State reaching $21.1 billion in 2002, it has helped push the US to fourth in world wine production and third in consumption. The Greek philosopher Plato is quoted as saying "Nothing more excellent or valuable than wine was ever granted by the gods to man." And this may be true beyond his imagination given the stated health benefits. The questions remains, with the increased consumption in recent years, will it have a noticeable impact on the health of Americans? Cheers.
